Huatulco Celebrates 486 Years of History and Tradition with Memorable Festivities

Santa María Huatulco commemorated its 486th anniversary of title granting with a series of events that highlighted the cultural richness and unity of its community.

The celebrations began on January 7 with a calenda that departed from the Central Park of La Crucecita towards Chahué Bay. Upon arriving at the beach, the festivities were officially inaugurated, highlighting the presentation of the singer Miroslava Ferra, who delighted the audience with her talent. The night concluded with an evening of troubadours, creating an atmosphere of harmony and tradition.

On January 8, the activities continued with the traditional walk from the old road La Cruz del Monte, led by the municipal president, Ing. Julio Cárdenas Ortega, accompanied by his wife, Lic. Jazmín Villar Vásquez, honorary president of the Municipal DIF System, and members of the council. The walk also included the honorable presence of Mtra. Saymi Pineda Velasco, Secretary of Tourism. At the end of the tour, a solemn mass was celebrated, strengthening the sense of community among the attendees.

In the municipal esplanade, the photographic exhibition "Graphic Retrospective of Huatulco: between peasants and fishermen" was inaugurated, offering visitors a deep look at the roots and evolution of the town. Later, at the "Cruz de la Misión", another calenda began that culminated in the municipal seat.

Subsequently, before the great Guelaguetza, in a solemn council session, the municipality of Santa María Huatulco established a twinning with the municipalities of: San Pedro Pochutla, Cuilápam de Guerrero, Loma Bonita, San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, San Pedro Huamelula, Villa de Tututepec, San Juan Bautista Lo de Soto, Pinotepa Nacional and Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, reaffirming the commitment to work together to preserve the identity, customs and traditions of the region.

The municipal president, Ing. Julio Cárdenas Ortega, expressed his gratitude towards the community and visitors for their participation in these festivities, emphasizing the importance of preserving and celebrating the traditions that give identity to Huatulco. Likewise, Mtra. Saymi Pineda Velasco, Secretary of Tourism of the State of Oaxaca, highlighted the cultural and tourist value of these events, which strengthen the sense of belonging and promote the heritage of the region.

The activities of January 07 and 08, closed with the presentation of the 11 delegations of the Guelaguetza, who through their dances demonstrated the cultural diversity of Oaxaca.

Finally, the night was illuminated with the spectacular burning of the castle and a musical pyrotechnic show, culminating with a dance enlivened by Junior Klan and “La Riata Costeña”, who made the attendees vibrate with their energy and rhythm.
